    a step toward discipleship for

         our children... you're invited!

What? HPUMC Acolyte Team

What is an Acolyte?
  • a leader,
  • a person that carries the Cross and the Bell Banners into the Sanctuary at the beginning of each service,
  • a child to whom God is so important that he/she wants to show others that they are growing in discipleship,
  • a child who wants to serve our congregation in a meaningful way.

Who? Children who are in 4th & 5th grade next year (current 3rd & 4th graders)

When? Sunday mornings, September through May, (three Acolytes at each of the three Sanctuary services). Acolytes carry in the elements of our faith at the beginning of the service, then are free to go to worship, to Sunday School or to JoyfulSpirit Choir.

Training? Sunday, August 26 from noon – 1:00 in the Sanctuary,
OR Wednesday, August 29 from 6:00 – 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary.

My child
wants to serve our church.

Do you know that acolytes:

  • Carry the cross into the service, reminding us of Jesus’ sacrifice for us?
  • Draw us to the altar with the sound of festive bells as we celebrate the Holy Spirit's presence in our lives?
  • By carrying the symbols of our faith, are an important part of our worship services in the sanctuary, as the ministers, the choir, and those who prepare the bread and wine for communion
  • Begin the worship service with dignity and grace?

Acolyte’s responsibilities:

  • Serve from September to May, performing their duties faithfully at regular intervals throughout the year at a particular service (8:30, 9:30 or 11:00) and finding their own substitute from the list of other acolytes when they won’t be able to come.
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes before the service so they can robe and receive any last minutes instructions from the Acolyte Coordinator and lead the Processional.
  • Attend an acolyte training meeting in August with one of their parents to learn about and practice what we do as acolytes and to learn about worship.
  • Have parents assist them in arriving on time on Sundays.
